Ofwat (sometimes referred to as the Water Services Regulation Authority) are the economic regulator for the water industry in England and Wales. They ensure that water companies provide a good quality service at a fair price. Ofwat monitors water companies’ performance and has the power to take enforcement action and levy fines if a company falls below an acceptable level.
Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI)
The Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) is an independent body that monitors the safety of drinking water. Their main task is to check that water companies in England and Wales supply water that is safe to drink.
Environment Agency and Natural Resource Wales
The Environment Agency, which operates in England and Natural Resources Wales, which operates in Wales, jointly aim to protect and improve the environment and to contribute to sustainable development. They prioritise prevention and education, before taking vigorous enforcement action where necessary.
Consumer Council for Water Wales
The Consumer Council for Water Wales is an independent organisation that represents customers’ interests with regulatory bodies and water companies. It also monitors the service that water companies provide and deals with customer complaints.
