Building water supply and stand pipe usage

We make a distinction between a water connection to be used for a short term supply of water, such as for building purposes which is then converted to be a permanent domestic supply and a water connection that is used only for building water for the duration for the building works. The latter should be regarded as a temporary connection and be removed when no longer required. It is important that the temporary building supply application form is used when applying for a short term or temporary building supply.

The Company recognises that on occasion third parties may legitimately request the use of water hydrants. However this has to be done in a controlled manner to protect water quality to all our customers including schools, hospitals and other sensitive customers.

We therefore facilitate the agreed use of hydrants on our distribution network subject to charges, permit, conditions of usage etc. Abstraction of water from our mains and use of hydrants without the use of permits is likely to lead to criminal prosecution, this is something we take seriously.

Third parties are welcome to contact our Stores Office on 01978 833282 for details on how to obtain permission and permits in order to use their own or hired standpipes.

Using your own Standpipe

Report to our Stores Department at Packsaddle, Wrexham Road, Rhostyllen, Wrexham LL14 4EH (Tel 01978 833282) with the Standpipe you intend to use for inspection. It must not be greater than 1” (inch) diameter and must have a fully operational double check valve.

OR

You may hire a Standpipe from Dee Valley Water.

In either instance you will be given –

  • A Permit to use the Standpipe for the period stated – this may be inspected on site.

The Company offers free training to all persons who wish to use/operate water hydrants and standpipes. Please ask staff for details at the Stores.

Finally, we reiterate the need to have the permit on site for inspection. Illegal abstraction from our mains may result in prosecution. Absolutely no 2 inch Standpipes may be used.
